A virus is a small piece of software that piggybacks on real programs. For example, a virus might attach itself to a program such as a spreadsheet program. Each time the spreadsheet program runs, the virus runs, too, and it has the chance to reproduce (by attaching to other programs) or wreak havoc.
An e-mail virus moves around in e-mail messages, and usually replicates itself by automatically mailing itself to dozens of people in the victim's e-mail address book.
A worm is a small piece of software that uses computer networks and security holes to replicate itself. A copy of the worm scans the network for another machine that has a specific security hole. It copies itself to the new machine using the security hole, and then starts replicating from there, as well.
A Trojan horse is simply a computer program. The program claims to do one thing (it may claim to be a game) but instead does damage when you run it (it may erase your hard disk). Trojan horses have no way to replicate automatically.
The most effective way to prevent your machine from becoming infected is to purchase one of the many AntiVirus products and install it on your computer. These applications generally come with a yearly subscription for updates and patches which allow the software to adapt to new viruses as they are released. The most popular AntiVirus products at this time are Symatec Norton Antivirus and McAfee VirusScan both of which can be found in most major retail stores or websites which sell software.
If your machine is infected, it is suggested that you disconnect from the network to limit exposure to other students or campus machines. Then the best way to clean your machine is to run an AntiVirus software, such as Symantec Norton Antivirus or McAfee VirusScan. These software's are available in most major electronics retailers where software is sold (Compusa, BestBuy, Microcenter, Staples, etc). If you are not comfortable cleaning your machine, and require assistance, some retailers have technical support centers that will do the work for a fee. For example, BestBuy located in the Landmark Center (approx 5 min walk from Emmanuel) has a service center called the Geek Squad.
First you should make sure that you have connected your computer correctly with an Ethernet cable and to the correct jack on the wall. Second, please attempt to connect to your roommates network jack if you are in a double or triple, as this will help us identify the problem. If you appear to be connected properly, and yet still do not have internet access you should contact the Helpdesk at (617) 735-9966 or helpdesk@emmanuel.edu. Please note, the Helpdesk is only responsibly in providing an active network connection to your room, and that it is your responsibility that your computer is working correctly.
Some of the more recent web browsers have pop-up blocking features. We would suggest that you upgrade to the newest version of Internet Explorer or look at browsers such as FireFox.
The Helpdesk is responsible for providing an active network connection to your dorm room, and will support any Emmanuel College required software such as FirstClass and other course related applications. The Helpdesk will not diagnos or repair student desktop related issues nor non-school supported applications. It is recommended that if you are having problems with your desktop, that you either contact the manufacturer or bring it to a computer repair center such as the Geek Squad located in BestBuy at the Landmark Center.
The closest place to bring your computer is the BestBuy in the Landmark Center a short 5 minute walk from the Emmanuel Campus. BestBuy has a service center called Geek Squad which will diagnose hardware and software related problems for desktop and laptop computers. Please see the map below for directions.
Additionaly we recommend University Computers (directions) in Kenmore Square and Microcenter (directions) in Cambridge.

To either find your username or reset your password you must go to http://www1.emmanuel.edu/ . When the page finishes loading, you can click the "Find My Username" or "Reset My Password" links listed under the Online Academic Resources heading. To reset your password you must have a valid email address on record with the Registrar's Office. While reseting your password, if the email selection screen does not have an email address on record, or the email address is incorrect, please contact the Registrar's Office at (617) 735-9960 or regmail@emmanuel.edu to have it corrected. Once corrected you will be able to reset your password.
Online Registration is only offered for specific short periods during the year for select groups. The Registrar's Office will announce when Online Registration will be available, and who will be permitted to access it.
The FirstClass and Online Academic Resources systems are seperate systems and as such may have different passwords.
You may set the FirstClass client to delete junk mail that it recognizes. To do this, login to the FirstClass client and then select from the menu bar Edit - Preferences. When the preferences window appears, click on the Messaging Tab. At the bottom of the Messaging Tab is a "Junk Mail Handling" selection box, change the value to "Delete Silently" and FirstClass will automatically delete any mail it sees as Junk. Please keep in mind this is a very simple feature, and will not catch all spam thought it will help a little.
