Information Literacy Program
Emmanuel College

Purpose
In support of the College curriculum, the Library recognizes the need for undergraduate and graduate students to learn library research skills as an ongoing part of their education.  Therefore, we have worked to integrate the Library’s Information Literacy Program into both the College’s liberal arts and professional curricula. We embrace the critical role played by the Library in the College’s educational mission and seek to participate in this mission as a teaching library.

Program
The Library’s Information Literacy Program is taught by the Reference Staff in media classrooms or in the library where we combine a presentation format with a hands-on workshop. The information literacy classes include three levels of instruction:

a. Basic instruction is provided to incoming students through an online tutorial on the Library web site. The undergraduate students complete customized library assignments as part of their First-Year Seminar. The tutorial was designed to present complete, uniform information about library resources available to the Emmanuel community, as well as to introduce the research skills necessary to use the resources effectively. The six sections include: library profile; search strategies; online catalog; online databases; evaluating resources; and citing resources. Faculty of introductory courses may wish to encourage their students to complete the online tutorial.  Whenever requested by Faculty, the Reference Staff will provide introductory information literacy sessions to reinforce methods explored in the tutorial.

b. Intermediate classes focus on search strategies, refining research topics, creating effective search strings, and evaluating retrieved material.

c. Advanced classes explore and facilitate discipline-specific research methods for upper-level courses and seminars.

We will work with individual faculty members to customize each library session to the subject matter and research needs of each class.  The success of the Program has been demonstrated by our students’ ability to research comfortably and effectively.  During the fiscal year 2007, the Reference Staff taught a total of 57 sessions (74.25 contact hours) at the request of individual faculty members.

Please contact us to schedule a library research methods session for your classes.
