Course Reserve Policies for Faculty: Placing Items on Reserve:
Emmanuel faculty can place Library-owned or personally-owned original items on the reserve shelf for student use in support of course instruction.
Each item to be placed on reserve must be accompanied by a completed reserve request form and submitted at the circulation desk to be processed by the Distribution Librarian. Forms are located at the circulation desk or through the above link.
New reserve forms must be submitted at the beginning of each semester for all reserve items. The Library will not retain permanent reserves.
By submitting materials for reserve, the instructor consents to adhere to the Emmanuel College reserve policies and rights.
All requests will be processed in the order in which they are received. The normal processing time is approximately two business days although this may vary. An email notification will be sent to the instructor once the item(s) have been processed and are available for student use.
PLEASE wait to inform students of an item’s reserve status until after the receipt of the “availability” email.
To view the current status of a reserve item, select the Reserves link on the Library’s online catalog.
The Library cannot accept photocopied materials. The instructor must provide an original work for the Library to photocopy according to copyright restrictions. The Library will only produce one copy from the original work for reserve. Photocopies may be placed on reserve only once unless written permission from the publisher is submitted to the library. If the above copyright restrictions are not followed, items will not be placed on reserve and will be returned to the faculty member immediately. Please refer to the copyright guidelines below for further information.
Library Rights:
Once an item has been placed on reserve, it is considered property of the Cardinal Cushing Library, and the library is not responsible for any theft or damage of personal items placed on reserve.
Returning Items:
A 24-hour notice period needs to be given to the Distribution Librarian in order to remove an item from reserve. Otherwise, the items will be left on reserve until the date indicated on the reserve forms or until the end of each semester.
Copyright Guidelines:
Cardinal Cushing Library has developed Interim Guidelines for usage of its Reserve Shelf. They are based on the American Library Association’s Model Policy Concerning College and University Photocopying for Classroom, Research, and Library Reserve Use (March 1982).
Please refer to: http://www.copyright.gov/title17/ for further information.
The library reserves the right to refuse an item for reserve if, in its judgment, acceptance of the item will result in copyright infringement.
The library will make one copy without copyright permission of any of the following items for ONE SEMESTER ONLY: |
|
| |
- an entire article;
- an entire chapter from a book; or
- an entire poem.
|
|
| |
The library will not accept the following for reserve without permission from the copyright owner: |
|
| |
- Repetitive copying: The classroom or reserve use of photocopied materials in multiple courses or successive years will normally require advance permission from the owner of the copyright, 17 U.S.C. sec.107 (3). [THUS, permission must be obtained if a faculty member intends to use the material for more than one semester.]
- Copying for profit: Faculty should not charge students more than the actual cost of photocopying the material, 17U.S.C. sec. 107(1).
- Consumable works: The duplication of works that are consumed in the classroom, such as standardized tests, exercises and workbooks, normally requires permission from the copyright owner, 17 U.S.C.sec.107 (4).
- Creation of anthologies as basic text material for a course: This can be done through the College bookstore, which will obtain appropriate permissions. The Library will put one copy of such course material on reserve for one semester only.
- Copies of entire entities: The Library can only photocopy five chapters (or articles) from one source each calendar year. This is in addition to the “Repetitive Copying” restriction (see above). Recorded copies such as CD’s or video tapes are strictly prohibited. Only commercial products are accepted for reserve.
Should a faculty member want to place on reserve a photocopy of material that exceeds these guidelines, he/she will need to obtain copyright permission. The faculty member must produce documentation of this permission to the library before the photocopied material will be made available through reserve.
Members of the Emmanuel College community are expected to be mindful of the restrictions imposed on them by copyright law and comply with copyright policies and laws.
